Beat the Christmas Stress

With Christmas only a few weeks away, Christmas stress is about to officially start. According to Greenwich University, the first Saturday in December is when the anticipation is swallowed up by feelings of stress. Shopping for gifts, decorating the house, planning Christmas dinners, attending corporate Christmas parties, and sending Christmas cards will leave anyone exhausted. And it’s no surprise that shopping causes a majority of the tension. Working against a budget and a deadline to find the perfect gifts raises our heart rates, shuts down our digestive systems and leaves us physically and mentally exhausted. Phew. That makes me tired just thinking about it. Here are some tips on how to de-stress instead of distress this Holiday Season.

  • Do your shopping throughout the year to eliminate last-minute shopping. If that doesn’t work for you, try shopping all in one day so that your mind stays focused.
  • Shop online to avoid crowds, long lines, and horrible traffic.
  • Eat right and exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. And definitely put that cup of coffee down. Caffeine makes the body release cortisol, the stress hormone, which leaves you feeling tense. Switch out your cup of coffee for a bottle of water instead.
